A YEAR'S LETTERS. Algernon Charles Swinburne.

Edited by Francis Jacques Sypher. Pp. xxxviii+196(last blank), frontispiece, 4 illustrations, notes, patterned endpapers; med. 8vo; blue cloth gilt; dust wrapper, lightly worn; Peter Owen, London, 1976. First British Commonwealth edition. *In 1862, four years before the publication of his famous Poems and Ballads, Swinburne completed his first novel, A Year's Letters. This is the first unexpurgated edition of the work, which is an autobiographical novel in epistolary form. Swinburne himself insisted that he could not be acknowledged as the book's author - possibly because certain incidents and characters from his life were too recognizable - and its first appearance, firmly expurgated, was in an obscure London journal in 1877, under the pseudonym Mrs. Horace Manners..
