Joseph Hemard (1880-1961) was a prolific artist and cartoonist who illustrated many classics of French literature. He also designed textiles, book bindings, posters, and costumes and sets for operas. His 150 illustrations for Le Capitaine Fracasse were vividly coloured through stencils by Eugene Charpentier (perhaps a relative of the celebrated nineteenth century painter Eugene Louis Charpentier?). Theophile Gautier's swashbuckling novel, first published in 1863, became the basis for numerous film, theatre and television adaptations. Item #135957
