Random House commissioned Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) to illustrate Voltaire's Candide as the first book under its imprint. The image at the colophon page (a house, depicting where Candide and his friends live at the book's conclusion) became the company's logo, and has remained so, in a slightly modified form, for nearly ninety years.
