First edition. *Scottish politician Sir John Sinclair (1754-1835) is believed to be the first person to use the word statistics in the English language . Sinclair was related to the Earls of Caithness, and i n 1780 was elected MP for the County of Caithness. He supervised the compilation of the Statistical Account of Scotland (published in 21 volumes from 1791 to 1799) . The account was based on information provided by parish ministers throughout Scotland in response to questionnaires sent by Sinclair in 1790 soliciting information about local geography and topography, population, agriculture and industrial production, etc. Item #139528
