[32], illustrated in colour throughout (3 double page), the text printed in red & black; demy 4to; pictorial glazed papered boards, with a couple of faint indentations to spine; the outer leaves faintly foxed; Jonathan Cape, London, 1979. First edition. *Inscribed and signed by the author on the title page (to Melbourne bookseller Albert Ullin): 'To Albert/ Fair fortune be yours!/ Kit Williams'. The book which sparked a nation-wide treasure hunt for a jewelled gold hare, made by the author/artist and buried in a secret location. Readers were encouraged to solve clues in the book's illustrations to find the treasure. A winner, announced in 1982, was later exposed as a fraud. The story of the scandal was featured in a TV documentary, The Man Behind the Masquerade, in 2009. The gold hare is now on display at the V&A Museum, London. Item #143338
