First edition. *Biography of the Scottish politician who, after the Restoration, was one of the chief ministers of King Charles II. Maitland became Charles's principal administrator in Scotland and a member of the king's ministry known as the Cabal. He was notorious for the ruthlessness with which he suppressed Covenanters who resisted the restoration of episcopacy in Scotland. Item #144234
