Uncoloured engraved folding map, linen backed, with an engraved vignette of A View of Scarbro [sic] with Oliver's Mount in the Distance at top fore-corner; map size 36 cm x 29 cm, folded into 9 panels, approximately cr. 16mo; olive green cloth boards with printed label (map title and 'sold by S. W. Theakston, 5 & 6 Long-Room Street) on the upper board, slightly soiled and worn; date in ink and small armorial roundel bookplate on verso of upper board, a couple of short splits to the map folds (paper only, the linen backing not affected), a little light foxing; Goodwill & Lawson, Hull, 1844. *A pre-railway pocket map of the area. (Scarborough railway station was opened in July 1845, following completion of the rail line from York). Goodwill & Lawson were printers and engravers operating in Hull from the late 1830s. Solomon Theakston's was the best-known library/bookshop/gallery in mid-19th century Scarborough. Item #144791
