Abrams, Inc., New York, 1978. *The philosopher Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was co-founder, chief editor and major contributor to the monumental Encyclopedia, our dictionaries des sciences, des arts et des metiers. Published in 28 volumes between 1751 and 1772, many notable figures of the French Enlightenment contributed to the Encyclopedia, including Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. These volumes contain all the plates prepared for the Encyclopedia: 'a storehouse of evidence regarding the position of science and technology at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution' [Introduction].
