Second edition. *William Howitt (1792-1879), author and traveller, is credited with 180 published works (several of which were written in collaboration with his wife, Mary). In 1852 William and two of his sons sailed for Victoria, where they spent two years on the gold diggings. His Australian experiences are reflected in several of his books, notably Land, Labour, and Gold; Tallangetta, the Squatter's Home; and The History of Discovery in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
