Pp. xxii+468+[iv]+376; library binding in later maroon cloth, spines lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed; top edges dark grey; ex library copy, with cancelled bookplate and stamps of The Royal Empire Society N.S.W. Branch on the upper endpapers and outer leaves, a couple of small edge chips or splits, a little light foxing and soiling; privately printed, Edinburgh, 1879. First edition. *Printed 'chiefly as a record which may be preserved by those who took part in the operations to which it relates, but some additional copies have been struck off, with the idea that they may be of interest to friends of the actors in the scenes narrated' [Introduction]. Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon (1829-1912) was a distinguished colonial administrator who served as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick from 1861 to 1866; Governor of Trinidad and Tobago (1866-1870); Governor of Mauritius (1871-74); Governor of Fiji (1875-1880); Governor of New Zealand (1880-83); and finally as Governor of Ceylon from 1883 until 1890. During his time in Fiji, Gordon adopted a policy of 'Fiji for the Fijians', and banned the exploitation of Fijians as labourers. He was created Baron Stanmore in 1893. Item #099671
