First U.S. edition. Hill. 1875. *John Williams (1796-1839) was sent by the London Missionary Society to the Pacific region in 1816. He was killed by cannibals in the New Hebrides in 1839, and is often referred to as 'the Martyr of Erromanga'. This American edition of this book did not include the frontispiece printed in oils by George Baxter with his famous coloured printing process using oil-based inks. Item #099700
