[viii]+238+258, title page decoration plus a couple of head & tailpiece decorations; f'cap. 4to; contemporary half calf, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt between raised bands, grey/green paste papered boards, with several surface grazes and a couple of small chips, corners worn, joints starting, the spine chipped at extremities, with small green ink or paint stain near head; all edges red; coloured decorative pastedowns; early name in ink on blank preliminary leaf, a little light foxing and soiling; Johann Christian Dieterich, Gottingen und Gotha,1771. *Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791) was a German biblical scholar, who in 1745 was appointed professor of philosophy at Gottingen University. One of his principal works was a multi-volume German translation of the Hebrew Bible, of which this is the volume containing the Psalms. It is divided into two sections, the first being his translation and the second his extensive annotations on the text. The distinctive paste papered endpapers, are highly decorative. Item #104567
