Illuminated by Samuel Stanesby. Pp. [40], mounted sepia photographic frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, illuminated title page, the frontispiece and all text within different elaborately illuminated borders, heavily gilt, with numerous decorative initials; moire silk endpapers; f'cap. 4to; cream cloth over bevelled boards, elaborately decorated in gilt and turquoise with a design incorporating roses and other floral sprays, rings and hearts, the edges slightly soiled and a trifle rubbed; a.e.g.; upper hinge starting, neat inked inscription dated 1866 in the appropriate place on the presentation page, occasional faint foxing and soiling; Griffith and Farran, London, n.d.[1857]. First edition. *The frontispiece portrait is of The Crown Princess of Prussia. The binding is signed 'JL' [John Leighton] beneath the title on both boards, and the chromolithography is by Ashbee & Dangerfield. According to Ruari Maclean (Victorian Book Design, p. 100), Samuel Stanesby produced at least eleven illuminated books between 1857 and 1865.
