Item #134443 FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS AND TWO PRINTED CHRISTMAS CARDS, SIGNED. Maeve Peake.

FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS AND TWO PRINTED CHRISTMAS CARDS, SIGNED.

T he letters (3 of which are aerogrammes) are from Mervyn Peake's widow, Maeve, to Australian author and book collector Robert Holden, and were written between September 1971 and March 1974. There are several references to Mervyn Peake's work: 'It is always a source of great joy to me when I hear how much his [Mervyn's] work has meant to others. Gradually more of his work is being re-published, as most are out of print and only obtainable in second-hand book-shops, and now even that is getting more difficult as they are bought very quickly' [September 1971]; 'You might be interested to know that the Western Australian Theatre Company put on a reading of the Titus books in Perth Cathedral on the 9th March, as part of an arts festival' [May 1st 1973]; and 'The manuscripts of Titus Groan are now in the Library of London University' [March 18th, 1974]. The other letter, dated October 1971 and still within the stamped and postmarked envelope, is an invitation to Robert Holden and his wife to visit Mrs. Peake in London. The Christmas cards, from 1971 and 1975, both feature black & white illustrations by Mervyn Peake, and are respectively inscribed 'An early happy Christmas to Ingrid & Robert from Maeve Peake' and 'With best wishes from Maeve Peake'.
