Item #135438 EX VOTO HANS HERGOT, executed 1527. Wayzgoose Broadside No. 26.

EX VOTO HANS HERGOT, executed 1527.

Broadside, printed in seven colours, with linocut by Mike Hudson; 50 cm. x 35 cm.; The Wayzgoose Press, Katoomba, NSW, 2002. 70 copies produced for Typomania XVI, this being one of a small number of artist's proofs, signed by Mike Hudson & Jadwiga Jarvis. *'Hans Hergot, a contemporary of Martin Luther, was a printer and travelling book-seller from Nuremburg. He printed Reformation pamphlets criticising the Catholic Church and promoted his own vision of a social Utopia, much to the displeasure of the authorities. His anti-establishment stance eventually led to his beheading in May 1527. ... The Hans Hergot broadside focused on the protagonist's rejection of the values of the Catholic Church. We chose to express it through a bold linocut image showing a brick to which the message raus (out) is tied by rosary beads, flying through the page and heading for the nearest (though unseen) stain-glass window. Being an image of protest. we kept the colour stark and limited, though in reality the broadside went through the press many times to enhance the graphic's 3-dimentional qualities.'
