In three volumes, totalling approximately 1,700 pages, with engraved vignette title page to each volume, plus frontispiece in Volume I and 68 plates in Volume III, appendix, addenda; demy 4to; half calf, spines decorated in gilt between raised bands, with gilt lettered red morocco title & volume labels, purple textured cloth boards, faded and slightly worn, edges and spines rubbed; all edges red; marbled endpapers, bookplate of Francis Gray Smart on upper pastedowns, hinges starting at a couple of points, ownership inscriptions (dated 1879 & 1962) Volume I, top fore-corner torn from fol. 2K[2] same volume causing minor loss to 4 lines of text, a couple of other small tears (not affecting text), a little light foxing; the author, Sunderland, 1830. First edition. *Francis Gray Smart (1844-1911), founder of the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital, was a keen photographer, numismatist and book collector. Item #141782
