Arriving in Adelaide in May 1853, he travelled to Sydney via Melbourne, then on to New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji. After returning to Sydney, he spent Christmas Day on the Victorian gold diggings and travelled to Van Diemen's Land before returning to England in 1854.
