Book Club edition. *Originally published by Faber and Faber in 1943. In 1628, the Portuguese Augustinian friar, Sebastiao Manrique, was sent to Bengal, where the Portuguese had a settlement. 'Bengal is adjacent to Arakan, a country which is now part of Burma, but then was an independent kingdom inhabited by a Mongolian race closely resembling the Burmese.
