In the foreword, Philip Gosse explains the circumstances of the cricketing poem which Sassoon had written in Shakespearean style in a copy of John Nyren's The Young Cricketer's Tutor, 1833. The recipient of this copy was almost certainly the cricketer Christopher Morris. The C. C.
