Pp. xxxii+408(last blank)+[ii]+480+[20](index), engraved frontispiece portrait; post 8vo; early calf, rebacked, with the original spines laid on, plus later red & black title and volume labels lettered and decorated in gilt, spines rubbed, both volumes chipped at extremities (particularly Volume II), the joints starting Volume II, edges of boards lightly worn; name & date (1979) in ink on recto of frontispiece, hinges starting, a little light foxing and occasional slight soiling; printed at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, and Re-printed for Elizabeth Watts, Dublin, 1765. ESTC T160420. *First published Oxford, 1763. (ESTC describes that copy as 'Edited by John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury', who later helped Captain James Cook edit his journals). The frontispiece portrait of Henry Hyde, which is not called for and was added later, is dated 1803, and is after a picture by Sir Peter Lely. Henry Hyde (1638-1709) was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1685. He opposed the accession of William and Mary and in June 1690 was arrested, by order of the Queen (his niece), on a charge of plotting against William. Item #167188
