[xvi]+28; f'cap. 4to; drab boards, with later gilt lettered red morocco title label on spine, the boards slightly soiled, edges lightly browned and rubbed, bottom fore-corners slightly bruised, the joints starting, tiny piece chipped from head of spine; later endpapers and binder's blanks, the title page and first few pages of Preface quite browned, tiny holes to pp. [iv-vi] causing minor loss to a couple of words of text, short split to bottom edge pp. 19-20, with a longer 6.5 cm closed tear neatly repaired near top fore-corner of pages 21-2 (no text loss), a little light foxing; printed for Jacob Tonson, London, 1683. Third edition. Macdonald 16c; ESTC R17641; Wing D2345. *Dryden's defence of the validity of the teachings of the Church of England was first published at the end of November 1682. The Earl of Roscommon's verses (On Mr Dryden's Religio Laici) were added in the present edition. A few years after publishing the poem, Dryden changed his position and converted to Roman Catholicism.
