Second edition. *First published in 1817. The frontispiece portrait is of Murray Maxwell, the captain of the Alceste, who escorted the new Ambassador (Lord Amherst) to China in 1816. The Alceste was wrecked in the Gaspar Strait, and Maxwell and his crew were marooned on a nearby island, where they were attacked by Malay pirates. They were eventually rescued by an East India Company ship. The author, John McLeod was the Surgeon of the Alceste. Item #096810
