[viii]+324(last colophon), black & white frontispiece portrait plus 5 hand coloured plates, appendix; rebound in modern black half leather, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled papered boards; later endpapers, bookplate on upper pastedown, early paper repair to long closed tear from fore-edge into text pp. 161/2, a little light foxing and occasional faint soiling; John Murray, London, 1818. Second edition. *First published in 1817. The frontispiece portrait is of Murray Maxwell, the captain of the Alceste, who escorted the new Ambassador (Lord Amherst) to China in 1816. The Alceste was wrecked in the Gaspar Strait, and Maxwell and his crew were marooned on a nearby island, where they were attacked by Malay pirates. They were eventually rescued by an East India Company ship. The author, John McLeod was the Surgeon of the Alceste. Item #096810
