Pp. 156, hand-coloured folding frontispiece map; full nineteenth century calf, with gilt lettered maroon leather title label (chipped) on spine, boards with gilt edges, the spine ruled in gilt around raised bands, small ink stain to upper board, the boards a trifle sprung and lightly worn; upper hinge cracking, inner edge of map slightly creased and torn, a little bleeding of map colour onto title page, scattered inked marginalia, small piece torn from fore-edge margin pp. 97/8, a little light foxing; James Ridgway, London, 1818. Fourth edition. *First published in Philadelphia in 1817, and reprinted in America, England and Ireland several times; also translated into German and Swedish. Morris Birkbeck (1764- 1825) was an English social reformer and anti - slavery campaigner who emigrated to America in 1817. Morris was a co-founder of the prairie s settlement town of Albion, Illinois. Item #136506
