The cast included Richard Burbage, the leading actor of the day, and Shakespeare himself, in the part of Kno'well, the aged father. The play belongs to the subgenre of the humours comedy in which each major character is dominated by an over-riding humour or obsession. In 1599, Jonson wrote a sequel, Every Man out of His Humour.
