Pp. viii+448, chromolithographic frontispiece and 55 plates (several with tissue guards), black & white text illustrations and decorations, index; thick post 4to; rebound in later (but not recent) half brown leather, spine lettered and decorated in gilt between raised bands, dark brown cloth boards, the upper board lettered and ruled in gilt, edges rubbed, with a few small surface grazes to spine, with short closed tear and small piece chipped at head of same; top edges red; later marbled endpapers and binder's blanks; hinges starting, a few small edge chips or tears, scattered light foxing and soiling; Cassell & Company, Limited, London, n.d.[c. 1888?]. *Originally published circa 1878 by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & co.
