Pp. 144(last colophon), black & white frontispiece portrait of the artist, plus 52 plates (4 hand-tipped and coloured), each portrait accompanied by a page of biographical notes; med. 8vo; blue/grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, edges of boards faded and rubbed; dust wrapper, soiled and worn, edges chipped and torn; name in ink at head of upper free endpaper, scattered foxing and soiling, including a few ink stains; Oxford University Press, London, 1942. First edition. *Shabby copy. Portraits of RAF personnel, plus one plate captioned 'Stevens' Rocket' depicting the destruction of a Nazi night bomber. This drawing was done from descriptions given to the artist by RAF fighter pilot Richard Playne Stevens, who was noted for his night victories against German aircraft. Stevens was drawn twice by Kennington, but went missing in action in December 1941. Item #154537
