In this work, Carter and Pollard proved that Wise had forged some Swinburne pamphlets, which they had been unable to substantiate in their original work on the subject. 'Subsequent investigation, some fresh evidence and maturer reflection convinced us that, whether or not their dates are false, these four pamphlets were produced, disguised under a bogus imprint, provided with a fictitious background and given bibliographical establishment by the same hand as the main group of forgeries' [p. 10].
