NOTE 214. WISE, WRENN, AND TENNYSON'S ENOCH ARDEN, 1864.
Contained in The Book Collector, Volume 13, No. 1, Spring 1964. Pp. 136(including advertisements), 14 plates, full page illustration; demy 8vo; printed stiff pale green paper wrappers, slightly creased, the backstrip lightly faded; upper hinge starting, the text block slightly buckled; The Book Collector, London, 1964. *Todd's contribution is Note 214 on pages 67-8 in the Bibliographical Notes & Queries section. He describes several copies of Tennyson's Enoch Arden, noting 'the occasional deletion of final blank N2' including in two copies held in the Wrenn collection which were supplied by Wise. 'Is it beyond all speculation that these Wrenn copies, certified as perfect in Wise's own bibliographies, represent copies ravaged, c. 1896 to produce the fake "Idylls of the Hearth" issue? How appropriate that Wise should use the last leaf - that tempting blank - to manufacture an early state of the first!'. Item #160023
