NECROPOLIS.

From 'Tree - a Journey' Series (c.1971-1973). Gelatine silver photograph, signed in pencil lower right of mount; image size 35 cm. high x 28.5 cm. wide; mounted, glazed and framed; Melbourne, 1971-73. *This is from John Cato's first photographic essay, exploring the expression of nature and creation in five series ('Tree - A Journey' (18 images); 'Petroglyphs' (14 images); 'Seawind' (14 images); 'Proteus' (18 images); 'Waterway' (16 images). 'I do not use the camera to describe objects but to explore their ambiguity. When I photograph a tree I am as much concerned with its inner force as I am with its "treeness". I am continually surprised that these inner forces reveal a unity at odds with their outer duality.' [John Cato]. Cato [1926-2011] was the son of renowned Australian photographer, Jack Cato. He commenced his career as a commercial photographer, but gained his high reputation as a fine art photographer and teacher. Item #160802
