In six volumes [so stated on the first title page, actually nine volumes bound in three]. Pp. 128+122+122+126+126+128+128+128+156(last blank), engraved frontispiece to each volume; small 12mo, in sixes; rebound in modern full calf, spines with gilt lettered and decorated black leather title and volume labels, the boards a trifle rubbed; ribbon markers; housed in a matching leather slipcase with gilt lettered & decorated title labels and three inner compartments; later endpapers, hinges starting at a couple of points, occasional mainly marginal damp stains, a little light foxing and soiling; Joseph Wenman, London, 1789. ESTC N61342. *A late eighteenth century reprint of Fielding's acknowledged masterpiece. Tipped onto the lower pastedown of the first volume is a note about the rebinding. Tom Jones was originally published in six volumes printed for A. Millar in February 1749. The first edition of 2,000 copies sold out before publication, and it was reprinted several times within a year, and translated into French, German, and Dutch by 1750. The frontispieces by [Daniel?], Dodd are dated 1780. Item #168513
