THE CASE OF THE HANOVER FORCES IN THE PAY OF GREAT BRITAIN, impartially and freely examined: with some seasonable Reflections on the present Conjuncture of Affairs.

Pp. [iv]+84(last blank); cr. 8vo; later qr. red morocco, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, red cloth boards, lower board faintly marked; book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper pastedown, binder's ticket on lower pastedown, date in ink and authors' names in pencil on half-title page, the original stab holes occasionally visible, a few leaves slightly creased, small early ink scribble in margin p. 52, outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; printed for T. Cooper, London, 1743[1742]. First edition. ESTC T86699; Gulick 301; Rothschild 599. *Rothschild places this pamphlet in his 'conjectural' attributions and quotes Lord Mahon's opinion that it was 'written not by Lord Chesterfield solely, but in conjunction with Mr. Waller, M.P. for High Wycombe, while the internal evidence renders it probable that most of the pamphlet came from the inferior hand and that, in most places Lord Chesterfield supplied the finishing details alone'. The anonymous author/s are critical of England's use of German mercenary forces: 'the keeping of 16000 Men abroad is burthensom and unnecessary . . . we should be rid of all farther Claims, with Respect to these obnoxious Hanoverians' (p. 82). In this copy sig. C1 is aligned at the centre, under 'were'. (It is sometimes found closer to the fore-edge under 'yet'). Item #169854
