[ii]+viii+630+[2](advertisements), frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, plus 3 plates, 6 folding plans, plus 4 folding maps & plans in pocket on lower pastedown; thick demy 8vo; red textured cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, boards with blind rule borders, cloth lightly soiled, edges of boards slightly rubbed, the lower joint cracked, the spine slightly darkened and gilt dulled; uncut; bookplate of the library of the Bishop of Plymouth on upper pastedown, with the later bookplate of David Levine, Sydney, on verso of upper free endpaper, the upper endpapers slightly tape marked, damp stain to top edge of lower pastedown, short closed tear to inner fold of the first folding plan (after p. 190), minor production (trimming) fault to bottom fore-corner of 3 leaves, the outer leaves and edges lightly foxed; G. Routledge & Co., London, 1858. First edition thus. * Irish reporter William Howard Russell (1827-1907) spent 22 months covering the Crimean War for The Times newspaper. His dispatches via telegraph from the Crimea were collected and published in two volumes in 1856, under the title The War, before being revised and retitled in 1858. Item #172140
