[xvi]+496(last blank), large woodcut printer's device on title page, a few decorative head & tailpieces and several initials; cr. 8vo; 20th century half calf, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in blind, marbled papered boards, edges a trifle marked; top edges black, the others red; later endpapers, with book label of David Levine, Sydney, on the upper pastedown, early inked signature and a few small annotations on the title page, a couple of small edge splits or chips, a 4 cm. diagonal closed tear into fore-edge margin pages 337/8 (extending into two words of a marginal gloss, with no text loss), a few faint marginal damp stains, occasional slight soilng, scattered light foxing and browning, Adam Islip, London, 1595. Essays on subjects including 'The Dutie of Magistrats', 'The ancient ordering of a Battell', and 'Where or when it is best to fight'. Arthur Golding (c. 1536-1606) translated many works (mainly from Latin) into English, and is primarily remembered today for his translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, which is known to have been used by Shakespeare.
