First edition. *Biography of the Presbyterian missionary known as the father of American education in Hawaii, based on material collected by his children, and 'arranged' by his daughter-in-law Mary Frances Morgan Armstrong. Richard Armstrong (1805-1860) arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1832. He established several churches and schools, and Kamehameha III appointed him Minister of Public Instruction. By 1585 there were 285 free schools with almost 10,000 pupils all over the islands. Item #174643
