The cover title is 'Defence of America. Geo. Francis Train, Unionist, on T. Colley Grattan, Slanderer'. Thomas Colley Grattan (1792-1864) was an Irish writer and diplomat who for a time was British Consul for the State of Massachusetts, based at Boston. His two volume work Civilized America was published by Bradbury and Evans, London, in 1859. Grattan advocated for the separation of the Southern states from the union during the American Civil War. George Francis Train (1829-1904) was an American entrepreneur and a Unionist, strongly opposed to Grattan's views. Item #175950
