INCUNABLE LEAF FROM THE BIBLE IN LATIN PRINTED BY ANTON KOBERGER, Nuremberg, circa 1487.
Single leaf CII, 32 cm. x 22.5 cm., printed on paper in gothic type, 71 lines, double column, featuring a central block of text surrounded by a border commentary; within a double-sided mount. *The biblical text comprises Luke 17.26 to 18.35, beginning 'illum multa pati . . .' ['And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man']. On the reverse, the text includes the well-known line 'suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for as such is the kingdom of God' [18:16] The commentary is that of Nicolaus of Lyra, the fourteenth-century Franciscan whose biblical exegesis is known to have influenced Martin Luther. Anton Koberger (c. 1440-1513) most famously printed the landmark Liber Chronicarum, or Nuremberg Chronicle, by Hartmann Schedel, in 1493.
