TYPED LETTER, signed, to J. W. Robertson Scott:
on Sissinghurst Castle letterhead, dated 27th June 1942, being Sackville-West's positive response to a request to contribute articles to 'The Countryman'. 'Of course I have long been familiar with your excellent paper and should be very pleased to send you a short contribution from time to time. At present we have got a gang of Land Girls making straw thatching by machine work[ing] here and I wondered whether a short account of their work and of the caravan in which they tour the country would be of any interest to your readers. If you [sic] would, perhaps you would indicate how many words you would like me to write . . .' The last three letters of the word 'working' have been added by Sackville-West by hand in the same ink used for her signature. Single sheet (20.4 cm. x 12.8 cm.), horizontal crease at centre, written on one side, with Robertson Scott's typed response to the letter (dated 29th June, not signed) on the reverse. *Vita Sackville-West (1892\endash 1962), English author and garden designer. John Robertson Scott (1866\endash 1962) founded the monthly magazine 'The Countryman' in 1927. Perhaps this letter was the genesis for Sackville-West's book 'The Women's Land Army', published by Michael Joseph under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1944.
