TYPED LETTER, signed, to Lord Younger:
dated 17th March, 1923, on Foreign Office S.W.1 letterhead, concerning 'the cheques cashed by Mr Maksoutoglou for British Prisoners of War in Turkey, I should explain that of a total sum of four thousand one hundred and seventy three pounds fourteen shilling and two pence . . . we have been able to collect and remit to Mr Maksoutoglou sums amounting to three thousand five hundred and twenty four pounds nine shillings and eleven pence . . . His Majesty's government are, of course, not legally liable for the payment of any of the sums represented by these cheques, but in view of the special circumstances we have secured sanction from the Treasury for the payment . . . on certain conditions . . . Steps are therefore being taken to remit . . . the amount represented by the uncollected cheques cashed by him . . . complete payment will be made as soon as we can obtain possession of the remaining cheques, some of which are at present in India . . . George Younger, 1st Viscount Younger of Leckie (1851\endash 1929), British politician , a Deputy Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire from November 1901, and Unionist Party member of parliament for Ayr Burghs from 1906 until 1922.
