A new edition, with considerable additions and improvements, including diagrams of all the principal actions. In six volumes, totalling over 3,500 pages, with 38 text diagrams, 28 folding tables, errata leaves, appendices, notes to annual abstracts, index; demy 8vo; later half calf, spines lettered and decorated in gilt between raised bands, nineteenth century marbled papered boards, slightly worn; all edges sprinkled red; book label of David Levine, Sydney below the earlier armorial bookplate of J. S. Henslow and a related inked provenance inscription (dated 1857) on the upper pastedowns, hinges reinforced, a couple of short closed tears to inner fold of tables, occasional pencilled marginalia, a little light foxing and browning; printed for Harding, Lepard, and Co., London, 1826. Second edition. *First published 1822-4. The 1857 inscription on the pastedowns states that the books were given to the bookplate owner by his godfather, Reverend J. S. Henslow: presumably the Anglican priest, botanist and geologist John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861) who was a friend and mentor to Charles Darwin. Item #179802
