ESTC T44729. *In September 1757 England dispatched to the French port of Rochefort an expedition of 31 ships of war and 49 transports carrying 10 battalions of soldiers. In October, the expedition commander, Sir John Mordaunt cancelled the operation and sailed for home. A board of inquiry was convened under the auspices of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, George Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville, and John Waldegrave, 3rd Earl Waldegrave. Following the inquiry, Mordaunt was tried by court-martial, and acquitted on a technicality. Item #181099
