Pp. viii+396, frontispiece portrait, plus 3 plates, pictorial headpieces, 3 full page battle plans; small cr. 8vo; early red calf, the spine decorated in gilt compartments between raised bands, with gilt lettered dark green leather title label, boards with double gilt rule border and small corner ornaments, the spine uniformly faded to brown, boards slightly scuffed; marbled edges and matching marbled endpapers; inked gift inscription (dated 1860) on blank preliminary leaf, upper hinge tender, fore-edge of lower free endpaper ragged, a little light foxing; Geo. Routledge & Co., London, 1858. First edition. *The inscription is from the Conservative MP George Higginson Allsopp (1846-1907) to his 'sincere friend' Robert Eden Moore. James Grant (1822-1887) was a prolific Scottish author. A distant relation of Sir Walter Scott, he wrote over 56 novels and several works of Scottish history. In 1852 he founded the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. Item #184298
