First edition. *Sir John Barrow (1764-1848), author of The Eventful History of the Mutiny and Practical Seizure of HMS Bounty, served as the Second Secretary to the Admiralty for 40 years. The Society of Writers to The Signet, a private society of Scottish solicitors, was formed in 1594. (Solicitors in Scotland were previously known as 'writers'). Writers to the Signet were the solicitors entitled to supervise use of the King's Signet, the private seal of the early Scots Kings. Item #184449
