Pp. xii+516(last blank), frontispiece portrait; demy 8vo; early calf boards, with the gilt crest of The Society of Writers to the Signet at centre, edge of boards lightly worn, rebacked with later calf spine and gilt lettered red leather title label; top edges black, others marbled; dentelles offset, bookplate of David Levine, Sydney, on the upper pastedown beneath a shelf label (of the Signet Library?), the first couple of leaves slightly chipped at fore-edges, a little light foxing; John Murray, London, 1847. First edition. *Sir John Barrow (1764-1848), author of The Eventful History of the Mutiny and Practical Seizure of HMS Bounty, served as the Second Secretary to the Admiralty for 40 years. The Society of Writers to The Signet, a private society of Scottish solicitors, was formed in 1594. (Solicitors in Scotland were previously known as 'writers'). Writers to the Signet were the solicitors entitled to supervise use of the King's Signet, the private seal of the early Scots Kings. Item #184449
