Since Barry Humphries's untimely death in April this year, many of our customers have contacted us to say how sorry they were to hear this news, with several reminiscing about meeting or at least seeing Barry in our bookshop.
Barry Humphries will be remembered by us not as a celebrity but as a dedicated book lover and collector, and as a true champion of the antiquarian book trade throughout the world.
Barry’s visits to us in Melbourne were always memorable and we appreciated his support of our bookshop over many decades. When returning to Melbourne, it was not unusual for him to visit us on his way from the airport. He would stand at the top of the stairs leading into our semi-basement and announce, in his inimitable voice: 'Kay, I’m back!'.
We will miss those announcements.
